Med Pay (Medical Payments) Explained by Kansas City Car Accident Attorney

missouri med pay coverage car insurance attorneyIf you are ever in a car accident, Med Pay coverage can be important to your recovery.  Med Pay coverage will pay medical bills incurred by you and your passengers for injuries sustained in the accident.

If you have health insurance, Med Pay works as supplemental insurance that will pay for your out-of-pocket medical expenses.  If you do not have health insurance, Med Pay is especially useful in covering expensive medical care and treatment costs.

Missouri Med Pay Car Insurance Basics

Med Pay is an optional insurance coverage in Missouri that you can add to your existing policy.  Coverage limits for Med Pay vary from $1,000 to $10,000. The limit is the total amount that your insurance company will pay for eligible medical expenses in the event of an accident.

There are many reasons why you may want to consider adding Med Pay coverage.  Some beneficial features of Med Pay include:

Additional Coverage.  It pays your medical bills that are not otherwise covered by your health care insurance. This may include expenses like your deductible, co-insurance, ambulance bills, chiropractic care, prosthetics, etc. It also covers you if the other driver was uninsured. Many of our clients are surprised to find out that other drivers will break the law and drive without car insurance.  This means you could be injured in a wreck that was not your fault and where the other driver has no means to pay you for your injuries. With Med Pay coverage, your medical bills will be paid up to the limit in your policy.

No-Fault. It covers you regardless of whether you were at fault in the accident.  That’s why Med Pay is considered a type of “no-fault” coverage.

Follows You. Med Pay follows you, not your car, so it can provide coverage even if you were not driving your car. For example, Med Pay usually will cover you even if you’re in someone else’s car, walking, biking, etc.

Paid Promptly. Med Pay is usually paid promptly, even if your car accident claim is still pending. This can help you pay your bills and avoid collection or impairment to your credit.

No Deductible. There’s no deductible for Med Pay and no reimbursement rights. That means you may recover the full amount up to the limit you purchased for eligible expenses.  In addition, the insurance company is not entitled to recoup the amounts when you ultimately settle your car accident claim.  This can increase the total amount you may recover in your overall settlement.

Low Cost. The cost of med pay coverage is usually relatively little.  The additional Med Pay premium might be just a few dollars each month. You should ask your insurance agent for an itemized quote of this additional coverage.
